Goals and starting points

Under the agreement of the Yerevan Municipality and with the financial support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA), AUA is planning to revitalize the Triangle Park into a green, open, and sustainable public space for all ages to rest, play, and learn. The current park is used intensively by residents of the neighborhood and AUA students, but lacks quality, atmosphere, and maintenance. In 2020, an extensive study was carried out by AUA students, through which inhabitants’ wishes and ideas were collected and analyzed through a ‘Stakeholder Engagement Process.’ The results of this research have served as the starting point for the concept design of the Triangle Park. Ten defined starting points are leading the concept design:

Goals and starting points

There is a high potential to revitalize and develop the existing park into a lively and green meeting place for both the university and the adjacent residential area. One of the most important challenges for the design are the large height differences. The park is situated on a steep slope, which is difficult to access for pedestrians, monotonous in design, and plagued with erosion and water problems. The concept design proposes transforming this slope into a terraced landscape, which introduces a comfortable and high-quality snake path into the park. In addition, the terraces offer space for diverse plant species, new trees, and numerous play, sports, and accommodation areas. All materials used in the park will be locally sourced and frequent maintenance will ensure healthy trees and plants. The water will be slowed down over the terraces and collected for reuse. A playful water element will cool down the area in summer months and create a place for children to play. The design also incorporates an underground sports building. This building will be completely integrated into the terraces of the Park and will only be visible on the south side, where the emergency evacuation exit of the sports building will be located.

Process and Planning

Last March, the design team and AUA began their first meetings about the Park’s concept design. This week, the concept design was tested on-site, the soil and trees were researched, and new path structures were tested to check the elevation levels. Inhabitants of the surrounding neighbourhood, AUA students, and other stakeholders have time to react to the concept design and share their opinions.
